FCP Express – “Viewer” video skipping
Hi Guys & Girls,
I am new to Final Cut Express, so please excuse my knowledge, or lack there of.
I have a problem, when I open a video from a bin to view, it jumps. Every few seconds the video freezes for a second or two but the audio plays through fine.
If I put it into the canvas and view it, the video & audio plays fine.
I only get this problem with video’s from my camera.
The video format is DV(DV25). It has come from my JVC hard disk camera and been converted from MPEG2 using MPEG Streamclip (720×576, 25fps), interlaced scaling.
The video plays fine in quicktime and imovie.
I cannot figure this out for the life of me.
I am using Final Cut Express HD 3.5.1
It’s on a new Macbook – 2ghz Core 2 Duo with 1gb ram. Running OS X 10.4.8
If you could lend me some ideas, it would be much appreciated.
Also guys, is this the best way to get the video into a use able format from the JVC camera?

Does the video play OK in the QT player? Your drive may not be fast enough. Some of the MacBooks come with 4200rpm drives I think, which are pretty marginal.

Yeah, it plays in QT fine. That is what’s so weird about it.
Don’t know about it being the hard drive, the difference would be marginal between 5,400rpm and 7,200rpm.

The MacBook comes with either a 5400 or a 4200rpm drive. You also want to make sure that the viewer is set to fit to window. You could also trash your preferences to reset the application.

Yeah, tried reseting the preferences, no luck.
What should I encode this DV video to? Assuming that every other type of video works, I may as well just encode this as something else.
I have MPEG Streamclip and don’t really want to lose any quality.

When you converted it, what did you convert it to exactly? QuickTime using the Apple DV PAL codec? Something else?

One of the options under MPEG Streamclip is “Export to DV”, then under that I chose the DV(DV25) Compression at PAL 720×576,25fps.
It works fine on Quicktime and my Windows PC.
I have converted one of the file to Quicktime using “Apple Motion JPEG A” compression at 100% quality, 1024×576, 25fps. But I noted the file is huge now, even bigger than DV.
So what would you recommend the compression I use is? I need widescreen and want to keep pretty decent quality, but don’t really have the space to have all these massive files.
The original file was MPEG2 with AC3, but was having troubles with that so converted to DV (as mentioned above).

Do NOT export to DV. Export to QuickTime. Set the codec to DV PAL and the frame rate to 25. DV is DV Stream, the format used by iMovie.

Tried using the Quicktime compression with PAL DV, the files are about 10x the size, which is just ridiculous.
There has to be a way to get the standard DV video I have got, that plays in every other program on Mac, not skip in Final Cut.

What was the original file size? For how long a video? If you set it correctly the file size should be approximately 3.6MB/sec. It works for thousands of people I’m not sure why it’s not working for you.

In the veiwer, what percentage are you looking at in the window. Do you have it set on “Fit in Window” or do yo have it set on 100%. Try changing the button over the actual viewer window to “Fit in Window”. Hope this works for the jumpy video. I know you have probably tried this but I didnt see anyone else mention it.
