  • Captured file format (AKA Avid to FCP)

    Hello,
I have recently captured some footage into Avid Express DV. I have NOT done any editing yet, just purely capturing long clips that I was going to subclip later. Now it looks like we are going to switch and do the edit on FCP. I am brand new to FCP, so forgive me if I am asking a “basic” question.

I realize that a software like Automatic Duck will convert from Avid to FCP, but I don’t have it, nor do I need to bring over a sequence. What file format does FCP use? I assume it is a Quicktime, but what is the codec, etc? Avid captures Quicktimes, using their own codec. Could I conceivably take the Avid quicktimes and import them into FCP. Would it hold the timecode so that I could hten BATCH DIGITIZE the footage to get the higher quality stuff later? I assume that if I can’t make this work I could also make an “edl” of sort, with just the timecode to capture. Any other thoughts? I am going to just do this at DV quality for now and then when the cut is done I’ll redigitize at the best quality possible.

Speaking of which, I am coming from DigiBeta, what would be the best quality possible for Digibeta?

I am so new to FCP that I don’t even have it loaded yet. It will arrive on Monday, so I want to be prepared. I’ll load it on my MacBook Pro while i wait for my iMac to arrive next week.

    thanks
    Tucker

Best solution would be to redigitise your tapes into FCP.

Anything you do with the Avid media will recompress and it will look terrible. Best res for Digi would obviously be uncompressed, but you will need more than an iMac to do that.

The only foolproof way of porting stuff over (in my experience) would be something like Automatic Duck. The other ways you’ve mentioned should all work in theory, but these systems are not designed to talk to each other – you could be setting yourself up for a world of pain.

Have you thought your post-path through? Why the last minute switch from Avid? How will you be delivering?

I realize the footage would look terrible, but we would be recapturing later. I just want the footage to hold timecode and reel info so we CAN recapture as a batch. Is that possible?

THe switch comes from the fact that we captured on a Avid DV system and we were going to go to Avid Adrenaline. That is what our whole company uses. Then, the client needs it rush and we can’t get into an edit bay (Avid) for 4 weeks. There are not a ton of people around our parts that have Avid, but EVERYONE has Final Cut Pro. So, I am looking for a way to go to Final Cut quickly so we can finish our rough cuts there.

Sounds like we may have to go automatic duck.
