I am having a problem importing my wife’s home movies from VHS into FCP. I have a dual 1.8 G5 with a Maxtor 300 gig external drive (I have already read that this is probably not the best for editing). I am currently running FCP 4.5. Everything was working fine until the last week or so. My hard drive will pull up what she has already imported and will allow me to play with it and FCP recognizes the video I am trying to import. However, whenever I hit Capture Now (as this is a non-controllable device) it says Allocating Disk Space and pinwheels until I shut the computer down and restart it. The VCR is running into a Canopus adapter and then firewire into the G5. Any help on this issue will give you my wife’s deepest gratitude.

Have you got your device control set to “non-controllable device”? The wrong setting there can cause weirdness…

Have you tried trashing the preferences?

Yes, I have trashed the preferences and FCP is set to non-controllable device. The tape I am importing from shows in the viewer but it will not allocate disk space in order to begin importing.
