  Clustering PowerMacs

  Hi there,

  I asked this question a few days ago but I’m still looking into how to pull it off…

  I’m thinking of buying a used Quad core G5 from a friend and “clustering” it together with my existing Dual Core G5.

  I understand that I won’t be able to improve the preformance of all functions with this cluster arrangement but I would specifically like to be able to help encoding and transcoding time of edited programs when I’m outputting to various specs for web or dvd.

  I also am getting an intern to help with log & capturing and basic editing duties. So I need to have an edit bay open for me to be able to continue to work while they are doing their work.

  Will the cluster be able to access the same hard drives at the same time? Will the harddrives all be networked together in this cluster?

  Here are the two computers I’m trying to do this with.

  My existing computer:
  Dual-core 2GHz PowerPC G5 processors
  1.25GHz frontside bus per processor
  1MB L2 cache
  4GIG of DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-4200)
  250GB Serial ATA internal hard drive
  2 external SataMAX 1TB raids (PCI – not PCIexpress)
  8x SuperDrive (single-layer)
  On open PCI expansion slots
  NVIDIA GeForce 6600 with 256MB GDDR SDRAM

  OTHER COMPUTER
  Two dual-core 2.5GHz PowerPC G5 processors
  1.25GHz frontside bus per processor
  1MB L2 cache per core
  1.5GIG of 533MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-4200)
  250GB Serial ATA hard drive
  16x SuperDrive (double-layer)
  Three open PCI-Express expansion slots
  NVIDIA GeForce 6600 with 256MB GDDR SDRAM

  Also My friend is wanting $3000 for the above computer…a good price?

  Is there a tutorial on Setting up clusters?

  That’s gotta be the most helpful think I’ve ever received online through cow!

  I also appreciate the lionk to the critique of cluster’s preformance. Haven’t read it yet but I will!

  don’t get too excited-it an html tutorial (not video) -although i’m working on a podcast for Compressor that will probably turn into serveral parts-including a clustering tutorial.

  So does pooch work with compressor? What about when you’re outputting from FCP using QTconversion or creating a QT file?

  Does clustering help Cleaner?
