  Using FCP 5.1 to watch something edited on FCP 4 has ruined everything

  Here’s the story. I have an older imac with FCP 4. Everything’s been awesome with it. UNTIL — I brought my external HD over to a friend’s computer who had FCP 5.1 It played on her computer, but now my FCP 4 is going ballistic. I constantly get dropped frame warning when playing files. Plus, my scratch disk got moved to my internal hd. And now I can’t even capture without getting dropped frames. WTF?

  So, it’s very clear that going from FCP 4 to 5 is the problem. Now, how do I fix it?

  Playing a sequence on someone elses computer will not magically change your settings…

  You are getting sropped frames for several possible reasons

  1. Your scratch disc shouldn’t be startup drive
  2. Your hard drive is too full
  3. You turned off Dynamic RT in sequence timeline

  ETC.

  Thanks, I actually just figured it out… When I brought my HD back home, I was using a different firewire to connect it to my iMac. Unbeknownst to me, since this is the first time I move it and the hd came with 4 diff. firewires. Then, I realized that I left my other firewire over at my friend’s place and the one connected to my computer was via the USB port… which must not have the same flow of info… that solved everything…

  Obvious, but not obvious to a newbie.

  A couple of things. I think you are confusing a few things here. You mentioned “I realized that I left my other firewire over at my friend’s place and the one connected to my computer was via the USB port.” This would mean that this particular cable is not a firewire cable but rather a usb cable. Don’t exchange the words firewire with cable. Your comment of “the hd came with 4 diff. firewires” is that you actually have 4 different cables (1 being firewire, 1 being usb, and 2 other ones). The reason why you had dropped frames would seem that your external HD using the USB port runs slower. It could be because that it’s a USB 1.0 not a 2.0. But it is best to connect via Firewire. Your machine is best optimized using firewire for FCP.
