  2-week dilemma – alpha logo blurry while on FCP play mode

  Hi,

  I have been trying to use an alpha logo over my video for a couple of weeks now. I imported the logo onto livetype. It rendered as alpha and looked great with my lower thirds. But when I imported the livetype onto FCP, the logo appeared blurry. I changed the settings of my livetype to mirror the sequence settings of my FCP. That helped with sharpening the lower thirds’ appearance on FCP. But the logo remained blurry. Today, I imported an alpha logo from Photoshop to FCP. I tried the psd and tiff formats. The psd renders the logo as alpha in FCP. The tiff doesn’t quite do it and has an opaque background.

  I thought my problem was solved. I had yet to animate but I was happy to see a sharp-looking logo. The psd logo over the video looked great… until I played it. The edges appear jagged. Does anyone know how to get a clean logo over my video? I’ve tried googling this problem all over the place. I’ve seen people encounter similar problems. But there is no clear solution presented. Would anyone know the solution to this challenge?

  It is essential when attempting to monitor the QUALITY of images in FCP that you use an external NTSC VIDEO Monitor (or PAL, if that’s where you are).
  Especially after you render…
  the Canvas is never high-quality (by design) and should not be used to make determinations of image quality of clips or graphics.

  VERY IMPORTANT:

  If you position the graphics, make SURE the VERTICAL setting for each KEY-FRAME (start, stop or hold) is always a EVEN INTEGER. (examples: 4, not 3 / -144, not -143.27 / 336, not 335.62)

  I sometimes forget to check this and I can end up with images that look fuzzy when in-position.

  This info applies to re-positioning ANYTHING on the Timeline: moving video, freeze-frames, internally-generated titles, and imported graphics.

  It can be quite detrimental to the quality of your final output to not double-check this every time you reposition and/or re-size an image.
