  dvd recorders and firewire inputs

  Hi, I’m new to the forum and fairly new to FCP (having made the transition from AVID). We’re looking to buy a DVD recorder with dv input so that we can firewire straight in to run off client approval copies (as less and less of them seem to have VHS machines) before going through the long process of encoding and then authoring the final product.

  I’ve searched through the forum archive and it seems that there have been issues with the recorder even recognising the IEEE input from the mac.

  Does anyone have any advice or recommendations for a (cheap) DVD recorder that is known to work? Been looking at the LG DR7800 if anyone has experience of this recorder.

  Welcome ganeshboy,

  I have not personally used that model, nor have I had problems with my recorders recognising my mac’s firewire. I have two diff models of JVC (although I wouldn’t recommend them as they have other issues) and have had no probs – I use my one at home to convert to analog for my TV when I offline at home.

  Welcome,
  I have experienced the IEEE problem with the Macs.
  It’s really weird and I tried for serveral days to resolve the problem to no avail. For some reason the FW cancel each other out? I could get one to work, but never both. I tried all the input combinations from the Mac, FW hub, decks, etc. and no matter what I did it would never work, but as soon as I unplug one device, everything worked perfectly. I’m not sure I’ve ever run across a problem like this that I couldn’t work around.

  Anyway, we just use the S-Video input into the DVD recorder. Which turned out to be a good thing since Pioneer stopped making the deck with FW input.

  For decks we having been exclusively buying Pioneer decks for 5 years, for one, very simple, reason-‘first play’
  A lot of DVD recorders will burn the disc so when you play it, the DVD goes to the, very uguly-mechanical, menu. It looks so much better to have the DVD just start playing. None of the Panasonic decks can do this, and I’m not sure about Sony. Pioneer is the only company that consistantly creates the first play for a DVD. Plus it’s NOT a feature you can adjust within the deck, it either does it or not.

  thanks to both of you.

  we ended up buying a cheap model and it works so it’s all good.

  however the first play issue is a good point. luckily we just need it to run off client copies prior to sign off. then we’ll go through the process of properly authoring things.
