export avi
Please excuse me if this seems like a dumb question. I have only just acquired a mac and final cut pro 5, I have edited a scene which is about 20 minutes long. the problem i am having is exporting the scene in avi format. what happens everytime is that it only exports about 1 minute of the film and then says it has finished, the 1 minute looks great but why wont it capture the entire scene on the timeline? the reason i need to export in high quality avi is that it has to be transfered to a pc and converted to wmv format (2mbps and 746kbs)for a website that requires wmv.
I hope someone can see whats wrong here cos I am so confused. -

Check your timeline at the point where the export stops. Anything unusual there? Perhaps a stray out-point that has gone unnoticed…?

nothing there, i did check that anyway. something I have just noticed is that everytime I try exporting to avi the file size is 4.2gb, it is almost like it stops when it is the correct size to fit on a dvd. I cant seem to find any settings that limit the file size in that way though.

Well… sort of…
The AVI format has certain filesize limitations – namely 2gb and 4gb. Under a FAT32 filesystem (up to windows 98) you can have a maximum of 2gb per AVI file. An NTFS filesystem will allow larger files of up to 4gb.
AVI 2.0 will allow what appear to be larger AVI files, but it does this by joining together many chunks of video data, each with a limit of… you guessed it: 4Gb.
I’m fairly sure that this is the problem you are encountering.
If you need to go to a PC for encoding to wmv, try and export a quicktime file (QT is easily installed on a PC system, and read by most video encoding apps, as long as QT is installed on your system…). You can then use the QT to get around filesize issues, and to encode to wmv.

thanks for the info, since I posted I have managed to export the entire scene using the divx codec, our only problem is that we used divx6 which has the file extention .divx although it is really an avi file. We use windows media encoder to encode to wmv as this is the prog we have found that gives us most control over our output. the problem with wm encoder is that it will not import quicktime files or even the .divx, we alter the file extention from .divx to .avi and although it was very slow we managed to convert to wmv, obviously if we somehow got a proper avi file from fcp it would have beeen a lot quicker.
Up until now we have been doing all of our editing on a pc using adobe premiere pro, which is a good prog and exports in avi which was ideal, I do like fcp and especially the mulicam view, if only we had some way of getting an avi file out of the prog. -

You could try and output chunks of AVIs – will WM Encoder let you join files together?
Maybe going to tape in-between the Mac and PC might be an option?

thanks Enzo, I did try out putting to tape before I posted my first message on this board, but that didnt work either, when i started the output everything looked like it was working fine the deck started recording, the movie played in fcp but nothing was put onto the tape.

That doesn’t sound good – should try and resolve that. It’s an easy (and sometimes quicker, depending on length of cut) way to get the stuff across without recompressing…
Did you try using the Easy Setup? Are you using DV? External video settings?

yes using dv, tried easy setup but cant see anything about external video settings. All i have tried is print to tape.

Your external video settings aren’t in the project settings, they are in the Edit menu ( I think 😛 ). External Video > All Frames.
Perhaps try and use Print to Video? That is sometimes an alternative to Edit to Tape, you may have to cue the recorder manually, though…
Are you using a deck or a camera?
