I keep running into the one frame dissolve problem.
If I have a clip in the timeline that doesn’t have any pad at the head (i.e. the first frame of the clip in the timeline is the actual first frame of the clip. Does that make sense?) and I try to add a dissolve to the clip that starts on the edit then only a one frame dissolve shows up. I can’t make it any longer no matter what i try!!! right-click to change duration … nothing. double click to load into the viewer … nothing. I have to change the start point of the clip, then add the dissolve, then use the roller to change the start point of the clip back again.

This happes mostly with clips that I’ve rendered in AFX. I’ve gotten used to rendering with a little pad now but I’m just curious if its only me!!!

This has happened on my system since FCP4 and FCP5 and places that I freelance on FCP4 and up.

Any ideas how to get around this?

You need footage to create the dissolve. Programs like iMovie, “pull-up” the footage to create the dissolve, effectively shortening your sequence. This is almost always inappropriate in a “pro” application. FCP makes you do the pull up yourself if you want this to happen. Thus the necessity of rendering a little extra in external programs.
