Compression and Output of Projects
Hi there all.
I am using Compressor or Quicktime to compress my projects for output. I am finding these both very unsatisfactory. For compression onto a cd they are simply horrible. The MPEG-2 compression for DVD is usable and ok but not exactly great. I am also trying to compress to the highest quality possible and transfer to a PC to be used as a looping display video. Firstly compatibility was a big problem and more or less the only thing that will transfer is AVI files. And then i still cant get a really crisp and clear picture.
Am I just expecting too much of these applications? If so what is there I can get to achieve better results. Is my set up (15″ Powerbook 1.5GHz 2GB RAM) powerful enough for these?
Any advice and help would be much appreciated.

Not sure what your asking. The laptop works right? Then it’s powerfull enough. As for compression for display that has MANY factors. Source for one, interlaced or progressive, compression amount, codec used, delivery. What is the application of the video? Is this a kiosk? Some interactive video? What are the limits of the delivery system? Sounds like the PC needs better software to re-interpret the Mpeg-2 to the monitor. Have you tried installing Quicktime on the display machine? Use a Quicktime codec such as H.264 or DV? Mpeg-2 should be able to look good, it sounds like tests are in order.

I use a Pioneer PRV-LX1 DVD Recorder and no compression when I need high quality video. I just connect the Firewire cable from my Mac to the PRV-LX1 and hit record. No muss, no fuss.
