  • Overscan with Newer LDC/Plasma Units?

How important is it to stick with the Overscan/Title Safe grid guidelines these days when the final piece will be played on a new LCD TV? Do you guys stay within the overscan area, or do you get adventurous and find that you can stray beyond the guides?

I’ve heard both that modern PTV’s don’t have any overscan as well as that they have up to 10% overscan. What’s generally done these days?

    Thanks.

I recently helped a friend hook up a room full of 6 new plasmas. All the exact same LG units, set to factory defaults. Some show an exact representation of the pixels. Others were cropped at about 3%. Maybe 5%. Almost indiscernible but we had a test signal grid and could easily see what was missing. We couldn’t find a way to adjust the picture back into place and there appeared to be at least one improperly mounted screen bezel.

Err on the conservative side and assume some cropping.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”
