render failure at 10min everytime
Posted by Layne Haacke on January 16, 2008 at 6:10 pmI have a frustrating error. Whatever I try to render (any comp at all) fails at exactly 10min in with this error. It’s always at exactly 10 min.

January 16, 2008 at 6:33 pmCheck to see if something happens 10 minutes into the timeline — a new layer? Effect?
If you’re on Windows, you might be hitting the 4GB file size limit on a FAT-formatted drive. Render to an NTFS drive, segment the render (check the prefs), render to a TGA sequence, or render to a codec that gives you a smaller file.
Let us know if that helped.

January 16, 2008 at 6:35 pmInfo:
It fails 10 min in on ALL renders, doesn’t matter if they are from completely different projects with unrelated assets.
It fails on different frames of the same comp. depending how far it got before the 10 min hits.
I’ve even started the render at different places in the timeline etc. same result at 10 min.layne

January 16, 2008 at 7:18 pmSounds like a) you’ve run out of RAM, or b) you’ve run out of disk space, or c) you’ve hit a FAT filesize limit.
If a) hold down shift when accessing the prefs>general (don’t let it go until you see the big prefs dialog) and access the secret prefs to purge RAM maybe every 5 frames.
If b) check your disks.
If c) see my earlier post. -

January 16, 2008 at 7:32 pmI have 9gb ram, 300gb of free space.
I already tried the “Secret” Pref, and set it to purge every 100.
maybe every 5 would help.I’m on a Macpro 3GHz quad core.
The only difference I can see -from working to suddenly not working- is upgrading my quicktime to 7.4 yesterday after the Macworld keynote yesterday.
does anyone know what the error actully means?

January 20, 2008 at 5:05 pmfirst, sorry for my english. I have the same problem. but the reason is simple. but terrible: The newnew quick time for itunes film rent, every 10 min, try to check the drm in an open quicktime. After effects writes the .mov specification at the end of rendering, just before closing the file. The qt engine, when check for drm, think you have cracked the qt information to remove the drm. Change the permission of the file and this cause the rendering failure. The only actual solution is render a tga sequence and then build a quicktime.
Sorry for badnews.
