  help — making one clip from several clips

  G’day,

  My wife and I have made a 15-minute video of our baby daughter. It consists of about 10-15 clips. It won’t win any awards, but it’s the first chance for one of the grandmothers to see her grandchild in motion.

  I purchased Graeme Nattress’ standards converter yesterday, so that we can send the video to friends and family who live in PAL and NTSC countries. The converter itself works one clip at a time.

  Therefore, what is the best way to convert a multi-clip timeline to a single clip without degrading the quality? Based on reading the doco, a self-contained Quicktime export seemed to an option, but I’m not sure about any loss of quality due to compression.

  My apologies in advance about asking such a basic question. We’re just hobbyists and this is our first attempt at using Final Cut Pro 4.5 (after upgrading from Express).

  Some options:

  Export a reference movie (not self contained), import that clip into a new timeline and convert from there.

  Or

  Duplicate your timeline and work from the duplicated timeline. Put the standards converter filter on one clip, set it up to the specs you want and select only that clip and hit copy (apple-c). Select the rest of the clips in your timeline and hit option-v (paste attributes) then select filters, then the standards conversion filter is now on all clips. Of course, this will not work if you have nay other filters on that first clip as it will paste that filter on the rest of your clips as well. the way around that is to simply remove the first filter, do the above workflow, and then place the filter back. or, you can set up the standards conversion filter,. make it a favorite, select all of the clips in the timeline and drag the filter to your timeline to place it on all clips.

  Say you’re editing PAL DV. The capture from PAL DV tape to FCP is lossless in that it’s just a data transfer. If you edit those clips on a DV timeline, you’ve still not lost anything. Say you then go “File-> Export -> Quicktime Movie… (accept current settings) make self-contained”, and make a new movie on disc which is the join of all those little movies. That new movie is still identical quality to what was on tape. You’ve incurred no losses at all yet.

  If you’re short on disc space, you can save a reference movie by unchecking “make self contained” and it’s still lossless.
