Using mp4 files in FCP7
The interviews I was given are all mp4 files. I’ve tried to put them through Log & Transfer and it will not accept them: “Warning C0001.MP4 contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media.” I’ve tried dragging the AVCHD folder directly in but get the same basic warning. I do not know what a directory structure is. Please help!

Thanks Dave. I ended up downloading Movavi and since it doesn’t offer a ProRes conversion, I converted the files to H.264 and then put those files through Compressor. What a pain. And I can’t imagine what they’re going to look like. Might be time to jump on the Premiere wagon! I appreciate you getting back to me.

Why would you do that? Why not upgrade to Final Cut Pro X. If you were using FCP X you could have dropped those AVCHD files onto the timeline and been editing a long time ago. FCP X edits AVCHD natively.

Actually, doesn’t it technically convert it to ProRes in the background? That’s been my experience with FCPX, no matter what you put in the time line or, um, project, it converts to ProRes.
Kathryn, Compressor will convert MP4 to ProRes for you.

No it does not. If you have Create optimized media checked it will create ProRes files, but if you uncheck that option, it will simply re-wrap the AVC/H.264 video into a QuickTime container. What you will have in your Original Media folder is a Quicktime MOV file with the original H.264 video in it with no loss of quality. This happens in a matter of seconds after importing. You must have Create optimized media check which is why you are getting ProRes files generated.

Thanks Warren. I have converted mp4 to pro res via Compressor in the past, but this time I get the error message: “File contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media.”
Unfortunately, my technical understanding doesn’t cover this!

I have not gone for FCP X because of the mixed reviews, mostly negative, that I read when it first hit the market. I’m comfortable with FCP 7 but do recognize I need to upgrade.

That was 4 years ago. The FCP X of today is vastly different from the first version that spawned those reviews. You really owe it to yourself to take a look. Download the free trial and see for yourself or watch some training videos to understand the new workflow. It’s an extremely productive editing experience.

If these are AVCHD files, FCP X is expecting to see the same directory structure that was on the camera card. You need the entire contents of the camera card not just the video files for the import to be successful.
AVCHD -> BDMV -> STREAM -> (video files)
Is that what you have?
