  QT imported into AE, comp settings??

  Hi there!!! ok, here is my question:

  I am shooting a film on NTSC/ DV Widescreen 16:9. After importing my QT into AE I saw two black bars on the right and left of the image, the animation looked fine but I couldn’t get rid of the bars!

  My comp settings were:

  720X480 NTSC DV Widescreen
  aspect ratio: DV Widescreen 1.2 (I also tried 1.33)= was giving me a squeezed images + black bars..

  aspect ratio: square pixels (it says in samll 3:2 frame aspect ratio)= normal image + black bars

  Now I’ve changed the settings and looks perfect like this:

  720X480 NTSC DV
  aspect ratio: D1/DV NTSC (O.9)

  If I am shooting in a QT preset to NTSC/ DV Widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio, when I import this QT into AE, why do I have to change that ratio to 0.9 in order to make disappear the bars and to see a non-squeezed image???

  I heard that DVD final movs can be made at 720X480 size dimensions and I don’t need to switch to 864X486, is that correct? and what is teh best program to put your QT into a DVD for final product to be seen in a widescreen? I heard it comes with FinalCut..but not sure where to get it.

  it was exactly what you said.So my final decision is to use this comp settings:

  NTSC/DV Widescreen : preset
  720X480
  Widescreen 1.2: pixel aspect ratio

  I know you told me before that I could burn the final movie in 720X480 size into a DVD for screenings, now, what program is the best to do that? I heard there is one that comes with FinalCut, do you have any info for this software?

  DVD Studio Pro ships with Final Cut Studio. It has some templated DVD menus and things of that nature if you just want to get your DVD out the door… of course iDVD has templated DVD menus as well. If you’re looking to do more customized menus then it may steepen the learning curve some (there’s already a decent curve if you haven’t ever used DVD Studio Pro). There is a DVD Studio Pro forum on the COW, so I’d recommend you ask any questions you have about it in there.

  Keep in mind that the high-quality (Animation codec) movie you made in AE needs to be compressed to the MPEG-2 codec before it can be burned as a DVD in DVD Studio Pro, for example.

  I like to use Compressor (comes with FC Studio) to compress using one of the two-pass VBR presets, then I import the resulting files into DVDsp.

  Some DVD Authoring apps do this compression as part of the authoring process, but I prefer to do it separately. Of course, you should get more info from the DVD COW as Darby suggested.

  To recap: AE high-quality movie -> MPEG-2 compressed movie -> authored DVD.
