  • Camera Position and Orientation Problems

Posted by Ian Babcock on January 14, 2008 at 11:58 pm

I am having problems with the position and orientation with the after effects camera. I am trying to animate the camera going around an infinty sign. I have the position and orientation mapped out fine but when I play the comp the camera orientates first and then changes position instead of doing them both at the same time. Is there a way to get them to do both motions a the same time.

General advice is not to animate orientation. Only use orientation to set initial pointing.
other general advice would be to place null object and use it as the object at which you point the camera. Parent the camera to the null. Rotate, spin, or move the null and the camera will follow.

If this is your first 3d project, investigate the null object and parenting sections of the help system carefully. If you have other AE resources, read those sections, too. These are not difficult topics but they’re unusual if you don’t have 3D experience. Nulls and parenting are crucial to enjoying 3D composition.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”
