  • FCP 7 and GH 4: where is my time code ???

Posted by Tim Matkosky on July 21, 2015 at 6:17 pm

I have just purchased a Panasonic GH 4 and am importing into FCP 7 for some testing.

The area in the FCP 7 viewer that shows the time code is just showing The running time for that clip. I have looked at other footage ingested. using say P2…and the proper time code does appear. But with the GH4….the left time code box shows the entire length of the clip, and the right time code box…which should have time of day time code….is showing the running time of the clip, starting at :00 an counting up. This is happening for each clip.

The camera is set to time of day , is visible on the camera LCD screen. and is running.

    More info:

I looked at the properties for my GH 4 clip. There is no time code listed.

I compared this to P2 clips, and there is a time code listed. Why am I not generating time code in my GH4 ???

    Wrong forum I know.

Did you convert the footage to ProRes? How did you bring this into FCP 7?

I am shooting AVCHD. SD card into FCP thru log and transfer. time code should be automatically recorded on the clip. I should not have to convert the footage to Pro Res to get time code…should I ?

I have discovered there is no TC on the clips. I am talking to Panasonic right now.

I was wondering if you used a third party converter that might not have brought over the code.

I thought that camera recorded TC. Because a firmware update came out for it to send TC out of HDMI to external recorders…so TC was part of this camera. I guess the issue is with the camera then…hope you get it figured out.
