Problem Exporting & Updating FCP Project
Hello, I’ve been working on a long project in Final Cut Pro HD 4.5. The computer and system was struggling so I upgraded to an IMac 4k. Quite a leap. The problem now is how to work on my project on the new computer. So, I tried the Final Cut Pro X trial but it cannot open my project. I sent my editor friend the project xml and she resaved it in FCP7. I then tried to open her newly created xml in DaVinci Resolve Lite, but still no joy. It would not recognise the media which is on a separate drive and it can’t seem to connect. I’m now thinking I may be better off migrating to Premiere Pro and have just started a trial. I tried opening the FCP7 project but it would not recognise it, it would only read an xml from the 4.5 project but did not import any bins, sequence etc. Any advice on how sort this? Thanks

Sorry, you need a third party app for this. Your friend who updated the project to FCP 7, now needs to export an XML of that project. And then you need to use an app called 7toX:

This is the only way to get a project from FCP legacy to FCP X.

your best bet is to install FCP7 on the new computer somehow.

Thanks for your posts. Will 7 to X work if I don’t have FCP7 installed? Guidelines seem to indicate you actually need the programme to run…
Also, is it recommended to run FCP7 on Yosemite? (If I can get hold of a copy!) -

You don’t need FCP 7 for 7toX to work. It doesn’t need to be installed. BUT, you DO need it to export the proper XML file. An XML from FCP 4.5 won’t work…nor 5, nor 6. It MUST be from FCP 7. But you don’t need to have it installed….you can do the export from another computer with FCP 7.
FCP 7 does work in Yosemite…but not as well as it will under a supported OS. Yosemite doesn’t officially support FCP 7.

what’s been your experience?
it’s ok for me now, but i’m at the early stages.one thing i’m noticing is projects slowing down as they get bigger in size, but sooner than expected
i’m talking around 40MB or so.im not sure if it;s the OS or the fact that i’m cutting on the client’s 13″ macbook.
