  1280×544 and 1280×720

  I have an .mp4 file I want to edit in FCP7 that’s a rip of a movie and the format is h.264 and 1280×544. In MPEG Streamclip I converted it to prores and chose 1280×720. Is this correct or should I have chosen 1280×544? Is there any reason not to choose the original format?

  I also did a test and converted a portion of the 1280×544 movie to 1280×720 because I wanted to see how different it would look but it’s identical to the original. If I convert the 1280×544 video to 1280×720 why isn’t the aspect ratio different? Shouldn’t it be stretched vertically? 1280×544 has an aspect ratio of 2.35:1 and 1280×720 is 1.78:1 so why does it look the same?

  I can’t tell you why it doesn’t look different, but I can tell you that FCP only works with 1280×720 (or 960×720 anamorphic)…so you need to keep it that aspect ratio if you are going to work with FCP. And you need to convert it to ProRes….FCP doesn’t work with MP4 well. Tons of potential issues.

  next to impossible to tell without seeing your original and the convert.

  BUT
  – could be a pixel ratio issue. you can bring that mp4 into FCP just to look at it;s format details if you want
  – has MPEG Streamclip padded the video in some way? (added black bard top& bottom)

  i didn’t know it could do that if it did.
  i use Compressor for converting odd formats to FCP friendly video, partly for the padding options
