multiple images in particles
Posted by Rick Morton on January 9, 2008 at 8:36 pmIs there a way to use a folder of images to fill a particle generator? I want the particle motion effect but I want many different images following the particle path. I know I’ve seen something somewhere that allowed you to do this, but now I can’t find it.

January 9, 2008 at 9:33 pmusually you’ll put all the images into a comp, each occupying just one frame. then use that comp as the particle, choosing to pick random frames from that comp to use as particles…
that’s the basic outline, but it depends a bit on the particle generator.

January 10, 2008 at 3:42 amHere’s an interesting question. Is there any way to use the aux system in particular to “eject” random still frames from something other than the custom particle layer. In other words have something totally different generated from the aux system (i.e. still frames from another layer with many random stills in it)
This would be so cool if all kinds of crazy particle could shoot out of the AUX system when following a emitter path.

January 10, 2008 at 3:00 pmi’ve done something similar, and it may work for what you are looking for…
i found i could create two particle (particular) systems with identical settings for the emitter (i linked the parameters with expressions), but chose different particle layers (nested comps actually).
for the main particles, the settings were straight up, just to generate the particles normally. in the aux settings for that system i set up the bounce plane to kill those particles.
for the aux particle system, i chose the other particle layer (nested comp) for the particles, but set the opacity of those to 0. that way i wouldn’t see them as they were emitted, i just wanted the particles to use in the aux system. i then set the aux system to emit the custom particle when the particles hit the bounce plane.
as long as the emitter settings and any turbulence settings were identical for the systems, the main particles lined up with the aux particles and i was able to have different custom particles for each.

January 10, 2008 at 3:15 pmI don’t know if this will work for me but I get it and it’s a great way to emit custom particles from the AUX system. My problem is that I am using a light following a path as an emitter. Not sure how setting up the bounce plane works and I have about 19 particle layers with different vanish and start points (so I can use multiple obstruction layers)
When you say you used expressions (one of my biggest AE weaknesses) did you use the pick whip to set up the emitters to be the same?
I’ll have a sample rendered out soon to post so you can tell me if you think it’s possible or not.

The road is created by particular and I thought it would bee cool to emit people from the aux system from the road. Crazy I know but I think it would be kinda cool…

January 10, 2008 at 3:41 pmyep, for the linking the parameters it is as easy as enabling expressions and using the pick whip. if you find yourself doing this often (or wanting to do this often), once you link the necessary emitter and physics variables (which can take some time) you can create a preset to easily recall those linked settings. you’ll just have to remember to always name the first particle system the same name (like ‘main particles’) so the expressions will link correctly when you apply the preset to the secondary system.
also, the technique should work if you had the aux system set to emit ‘from main particles’ rather than ‘collision event,’ as i had done.

I’ve got a comp that has nearly 1000 images to fly around, and doing this all by hand would take forever…
