  Adding a background behind a clip in the timeline.

  Hello All:

  I’m working with a 4:3 clip in a 16:9 timeline. The client wants a color background to cover the black bars on either side of the video.

  Is it possible to create a background color behind a timeline? Or, is the solution to key a color (orange in this case) over the black side bars?

  Don’t even need the mask. Just put it on an upper layer. Make sure the sequence settings are 16:9…put the COLOR SOLID on V1, and the clip on V2…bammo…you have color on the sides.

  To make it blend a bit more, and not look as awkward, use the color sampling tool when you’re making your color layer, and sample one of the major color areas of the actual motion video. Then also apply some vignette to that layer, and maybe add soft drop shadow to the top video layer.

  You can also duplicate the actual video layer underneath, blow it up and gaussian blur the heck out of it, as a background. Very popular technique for fitting vertical videos into 16×9 space.
