  FCP export to .mov file question

  Now that I am exporting the movie to quick time file for the purpose of making DCP files. I tried twice they both failed (says general error) when it is around 50% finish. The settings I used are:

  FCP7 – export – use quick time conversion

  Video setting:
  Compression type: Apple ProRess 422 (HQ)
  Frame rate: Current FPS
  all other options are NOT selected.
  size: 1920×1080 HD
  Preserve aspect ratio using letterbox if required – selected.
  Deinterlace source video – not selected

  Sound setting:
  Linear PCM
  Channels: mono
  Rate: 48 kHz
  Render setting: Normal and Linear PCM settings sample size:24 bits with Little Endian selected.

  The timeline sequence setting is:
  1920×1080 HDTV 1080i 16:9
  Pix aspect ratio: square
  Editing timebase 23.98
  Apple ProRes 422
  Audio output: 6 channels (I have 6 audio files on timeline), discreet channel

  Why is that? I am going to try direct export – quick time movie (instead of “use quick time conversion” as stated above) with one single setting of Apple proRes 422 (HQ) 24 fbs 48 Khz.

  Will this work?

  YOu shouldn’t be using QUICKTIME CONVERSION…that will recompress the footage. You don’t want that. Export a QUICKTIME MOVIE, self contained, using the sequence settings.

  Yes, it matters. Unchecked it’s a smaller file that points to the existing media. In order for it to work, you need the drive with all the media on it connected. Otherwise it won’t work. Meaning no drive connected, it has no media to reference. That is called a Quicktime REFERENCE movie.

  It needs to be self contained.

  Hi Shane,

  I have one more question to ask you, if the sequence setting is apple ProRes 422, when I export quicktime movies, should I keep the export setting the same? or if the export setting ProRes 422 HQ would be better in producing DCP files?

  Yes…just use QT Movie, use sequence settings. The result will be a QT file that’s ProRes 422.

  If your footage is ProRes 422…and your sequence is ProRes 422…exporting HQ won’t increase the quality. It will only increase the file size. The compression is already done…simply changing 422 to HQ won’t mean you gain quality…like it was hidden away. In fact, keeping it 422 and not converting it to HQ will make it BETTER…because you won’t be adding another layer of compression.
