  Quicktime issues with FCP reference files

  So I recently upgraded my OS to Mt. Lion. I have Quicktime 10.2 and I am unable to play Non Self-Contained quicktime files in Quicktime X. The audio plays but the video is black.

  The finder plays it fine and compressor and Streamclip will convert it. But quicktime just does not see the video in reference files.

  I’m unsure if IT upgraded my Quicktime during the process of upgrading my OS. I have seen issues online about Quicktime X not recognizing codecs – but has anyone heard of this issue?

  Self contained files work fine. No problem at all.

  Quicktime X is half finished software anyway. Lacks a lot of things. QT 7 should be what you use.

  QT reference files are really an accident waiting to happen anyway. Change one little thing on the underlying timeline and they become worthless. I have always users NOT to get in the habit of using them, because they aren’t labeled by default as reference files, and so they can bite you later if you think you have an exported copy of a project.

  I tried to install QT 7 but it wouldn’t let me since Quicktime X was on there already. That was strange because i had both on my computer previous to the OS upgrade.

  I work on 30 min segments that i provide to execs for viewing. Up until now my workflow has been that i export reference files and make them 480p in Quicktime. The reference files are much quicker to export and this allows me to continue working in FCP while its being converted in QT as well as take up less memory.

  Use the QuickTime 7 installer that’s on the FInal Cut Studio install discs. This one is smart enough to install it in the Utilitiles folder and not the Applications folder, where the QuickTime X player already lives.

  If that fails, try hiding the QuickTime X player within a folder temporarily.

  QTX Player does not support reference files, as you have seen.
