  Purchasing FCP

  I am trying to buy FCP for my son. He has a MacBookPro OS-X 6.0; so, I don’t think the latest FCPX version will work. I think that FCP Studio 6 Academic version will work. The pricing of this confuses me. Some are called upgrades, which implies that he needs an existing FCP and others say full version. Pricing ranges from $149 – $500. Can anyone help me sort through this? Thanks, Cynthia.

  Either get full versions, or Academic. Both of those are full versions, but Academic versions aren’t elegible for “upgrade pricing” of later versions…which is moot because there is no longer an upgrade path for the old version.

  If you can find FCP 7…FULL verion or Academic…get that. Do not get an upgrade version. And FCP 7 will deal with more of the current camera formats than FCP 6. FCP 6 is 6 years old, while FCP 7 is 4 years old. Either way you are getting an old, discontinued version.

  It would be best to get something current…but I know you are limited by the computer he currently owns.
