Creating wavs from silent mpegs
Hi guys,
I have about 50 silent mpegs that I need to create wavs for – each mpegs needs a wav with a matching length and name. The wavs need to be separate from the mpegs.
I’ve tried running the mpegs through FCP, Soundtrack Pro, Mpeg Streamclip, Audacity and Digital Rapids. No joy. If they do create a file, it’s 0KB.
I could do this manually through FCP – cutting down wavs to the right length and exporting them – but as there are 50 to do, I’m kinda hoping there’ll be an automated way.
Any suggestions? Please?

WAV…that’s an audio file, no? How can you make an audio file out of nothing? If the MPEGs are silent, there is no audio. Do you mean you are doing sound design in FCP, or soundtrack pro? Making sounds to match the picture?

I’m guessing what they mean is, they want a null audio clip to associate with each video, so that when put on a timeline, they all line up similarly to other clips that did contain audio. But I really don’t understand the question either.

Hmm, just as I feared. Yeah, I need to create silent wav files to match the mpegs so I can then run the wavs through another piece of software to create a soundtrack for the mpegs. For this software to do its job, the wavs have to be the correct length.
It was a desperation, “Oh, crap, I’ve got 50 of these to do, there must be a better way,” question.

Alison, what is this software you mention?

It’s specialist audio description mixing software – it automatically mixes the AD recordings with the base soundtrack. We’re usually given soundtrack wavs or are able to generate silent wavs ourselves. It’s just unfortunate that this job involves so many silent mpegs.

I should probably add I’m also a freelance video editor. For this job I use FCP7 to check the mixed wavs against the videos and also to generate wavs if necessary, etc.
