    Hello,
    i’ve edited my short film which i shot on 16mm, had transferred to digibeta, which i then put onto dv, which i then captured via firewire into final cut pro. i edited these NTSC files but am now looking to get upres it to HD. What steps do i take from here?

    Do you have ALE or FLEX files that refer to the telecine of the footage to Digibeta? That would be the best…to be able to re-telecine the footage as HD.

    But, barring that, if the timecode of the DV matches that of the Digibeta, you can give the project file or EDL to a post facility or online editor who has the capabilities to upconvert the digibeta to HD. It won’t be nearly as good as being able to telecine the film to HD, but it’s a lot better than blowing up what you have, or doing it from the DV files.

    would a solution be to use the edl to make a print of the final film, then telecine this to HD?

    Ask the lab what the possibilities are if you only have an EDL that references the tape timecode. They can answer better than I can.

    you;d be hard pressed to find people to “make a print” for you these days!
    plus telecine from 16mm print would not look the best.

    most likely scenario would be to provide an EDL or XML to a post house experienced with film work,
    they would SCAN the used sections from neg to a digital format, and do a conform.
    then grade and finish it (add titles, do any vfx)

    I’ll bow to Nick’s greater experience in this area. Last time I dealt with film it was on TV shows with an SD master…

    a couple of extra points:

    with all those steps between your original neg and what you’ve been cutting with,
    you really should make sure you have correct timecode that will trace back to your 24fps film.

    an HD telecine will probably be cheaper & more efficient than a scan.
    plus it’ll pay to shop around.

    thanks a lot nick,
    because of all of my format changes and general confusion that has ensued, i’m considering just doing a scan (i guess telecine is now obsolete?) of all of my film that i shot for this particular film. do u have any recommendations for companies in the nyc area? i am considering going with deluxe.
