ProRes 1080 HQ Playback USB3
Posted by William Carr on August 18, 2013 at 12:00 amOn a brand new Retina MBPRO with USB3 RAID-0 drive, is it expected that FCP7 would not reliably play back 1080 23.98 HQ files?
With Safe RT there is red render bars. With Unlimited I get orange bars and some playback, but dropped frames.

August 18, 2013 at 12:55 amUSB3 should be fast enough but that is only one part of the equation. Try doing a speed test on the drive to see what it is capable of. Free speed tests are available from Blackmagic & AJA.

August 18, 2013 at 7:07 pmIf you have render bars with your footage in the timeline, that doesn’t mean your drive is too slow, that means that your sequence settings don’t match your clip settings. What you need to do is add a clip to a new sequence, click YES when it asks if you want the settings to match, and then you shouldn’t have any render bars at all.

August 18, 2013 at 7:17 pmI did exactly that to start with, and I get orange bars with Unlimited RT and red bars with Safe RT.

August 18, 2013 at 7:57 pmThen something is wrong…you should have NO bars. Unless the footage is in some way different that the standard formats FCP works with. Say, ProRes HQ, but 1920×1024…some other dimension rather than the standard 1920×1080.
What are the settings for your footage?

August 18, 2013 at 8:10 pmIt is weird, especially since I used a standard preset in Compressor to convert the clips.
Here are the specs from one of the clips as copied out of the QT viewer info window:Apple ProRes 422 (HQ), 1,920 x 1,080 (1,888 x 1,062)
Linear PCM, 16 bit big-endian signed integer, 2 channels, 48000 Hz
23.98

August 18, 2013 at 10:09 pmOK, sorry, I missed a vital clue, user error and case closed.
The clip bin was pointing at the wrong files (same file names). Be it known that 1080 ProRes HQ plays fine without render bars in FCP7 via USB3 RAID-0.
