  external video capture card and settings

  Hi

  I am looking for an ‘external video capture card’ that will record a screen and sound from a PC or preferable a mac at 30fps and 720p that I can then edit with in final cut pro I have a budget up to £150 but can go further if need be. This is for video game trailer i am putting together which is why i need to be able to record the screen.

  Also i have been told requirements for video capture are to have the settings below…

  settings

  – 720p

  – 30fps absolutely steady (no drops from game)

  – vsync solid, zero issues from game

  – Y,U,V = 4,2,0, do not set to 4,2,2

  – 8bit colour space enough, 10bit not essential

  – lossless capture essential

  How would i go about achieving these settings once i have a capture card?

  Lossless capture means your choice is limited to the likes of Matrox, Aja and Blackmagic. Prices start at around three or four times your budget though.

  Since your spec includes YUV=4,2,0 (which is by definition lossy), I assume that lossless means no motion artefacts and no apparent loss of sharpness, rather than no compression. That means that codecs like ProRes, DNxHD, XDCamHD and high data rate (say, 50mbps or above) AVCHD should be ok in my opinion (if you’re cutting in FCP then it’s logical to go straight to ProRes if you have that option).
