  Using Thunderbolt drives with older MacBook Pros

  Hey everyone,

  I’m currently helping to edit a series on FCP and we’re having issues with the workflow. The intent is for the producer to send out 4TB Thunderbolt drives to myself and other editors in different parts of the country. The prep work is being done on newer Macs with Thunderbolt. The problem is, I and the other editor are working on non-Thunderbolt Macs.

  I know that Apples’ Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter cable won’t work for us in this. They fail to power the drive. Is there any other option for us?

  Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

  Yeah…don’t send out Thunderbolt drives. Or, get drives that have TB and Firewire 800. It’s pointless to send a drive to someone when they cannot connect to it.

  Why can you power the drives via AC?
