  partial push-off technique

  I’d like to know how to do the partial push-off that I see on TV frequently. It usually starts with a talking head, then a graphic/CG comes from the right side of the screen pushing the video over slightly to the left but not completely off screen to allow the graphic to be read. Sometimes the graphic goes back off to the right and the talking head video moves right to completely fill the screen again. Is this a built-in transition or is it a motion that must be applied simultaneously to both clips? Thanks for the advise.

  It could be either, based on which system you use. It could be a template in Apple Motion, or two keyframed tracks in FCP. Or it could be a live DVE move in a switcher.

  I’m sure with some shows it’s a live DVE move. But I also see it on obviously recorded productions, so I am wondering how one would do it in FCP. Thanks.

  Put your two clips on different tracks. Using keyframes in the Motion tab, set your move up as desired. Really very simple and easy.
