  • Search FCP from the finder

I would like use the finder to search for names inside the FCP7 projects. I know Spotlight indexes Word documents, excel, text edit, but it doesn’t seem to do that for FCP7 project files. Is there a way to make that happen? Is there some more elegant solution?

Initial issue I would like to solve:
I have a large archive of films that I have now split up into 20 or so smaller projects. Some if not all of these projects will grow over time. I still want to be able to search them as if they were one big project. Seems like the finder trick I mentioned above would be the solution, but doesn’t seem to work yet.

    Thanks
    Doug

Ok found a solution albeit a poor one.

    1) Make a copy of all the Project Files in question
    2) Change the extension to .txt
    3) Spotlight will re-index to use terminal and type “mdimport ”

This of course will require I create new text versions ever so ofter which is annoying and if anybody has a better solution, please let me know.

sorry, i’m pretty sure you can not use spotlight to search within FCP projects.
(i wonder if this has changed with FCPX?)

you solution sounds like quite a good one.
any other solution i can think of has the same issues: you cant a search inside the FCP project doc, so you need to create a different format which would require up-dating when the project changes.

the other solution i can think of is exporting batch lists from your browser.
they would have a lot less junk info than a project file or XML doc.

maybe you have to re-think what you do within FCP.
how about you go back to keeping a master project but one that contains only clips, no sequences
(i assume you are searching for clips, but could be wrong)
as new material comes in you add to the master project, as well as your smaller ones.

final cut server was supposed to be a large searchable database for all your FCP assets.
i think it is dead now
or look into other logging solutions such as CatDV
