What does this thing do?
Posted by Paul Roper on March 12, 2013 at 12:48 pmHello,
I’ve been using FCP since it was first launched, and have never had the need to click on this thing, next to the color picker:
It seems to do absolutely nothing, other than flip itself horizontally. So I’ve totally ignored it for all these years. Am I missing anything?
Thanks,

I’m not sure exactly what it does or what it is for, I’ve never used it.Bars & Tone

March 12, 2013 at 1:48 pmif you keyframe colour values, this can determine the direction of the change around the colour wheel.

OK. I guess I’ve never had a need to do that. Maybe I’m not thinking creatively enough.

And no, I’ve never keyframed colour values either.

March 12, 2013 at 2:48 pmI get it now.
If you key frame your color to change from purple to green the Hue Direction determines whether it goes purple though blue to green or purple through yellow to green. Hmm, still don’t think I’ve ever had a need for it, but now I know. I’ll save this and amaze a producer one day with my color wizardry options.
Thanks for digging it up Paul. -

March 12, 2013 at 5:25 pmHope it works better than the axial vs. radial selector in Apple COLOR, which either did exactly the opposite of what it was supposed to do, or took the long way out to infinity, instead of through the vector origin… but Apple “took care of it”, *now sleepin’ wit’ da fishes*.

March 12, 2013 at 5:53 pmIn video, the tone is given by the phase (angle) of the vector Chrominance.
You can go from one tone to other “Clockwise” or “Counterclockwise”.
This button set the direction.
