FCP 7 on MacBook Pro or Mac Pro
Can someone tell me if FCP 7 will run faster on a MacBook Pro (2.53 GHz Intel Core i5 with 8Gb RAM) than on a MacPro 4 Core 2 x 2.66Ghz with 8Gb RAM? Thanks. Speed difference? Many thanks.

Difficult to answer like that: What processor sits in the MacPro? Can you pump the RAM of the MAcPro…in that case, I’d definitely favor the MacPro (unless you only use FCP, then extra horse power in the RAM would not matter).
Depends really for what kind of work you need it for. What’s more important, mobility or the need to change and upgrade (RAM, Video Cards, monitors and so on).Greetz.

MacBook Pro has Intel i5 2.53GHz processor with 8GB of RAM.. I edit rarely, just need to cut one job (3 camera live performance DVD). Wondering if i can get away with doing post on MacBook rather than investing in MacPro. Mobility not an issue. Will link MacBook to large display.

I own the MacBook Pro. Just wondering if I can get away with using it for this one edit job (with my large external display), rather than investing in a 3/4 year old MacPro.
The job does have some very chunky ProRes HQ video files – from a three-camera record of a music performance, but I have 400GB HDD on the MacBook and gig external drives. -
First of all, I think to buy a whole MacPro only for one job is a bit like shooting with a canon on pidgins.
I think you MacBook will handle it. Worst Case, create offline/ Proxy Files for editing, if you do multi cam and your CPU cannot handle it.
Use a fast external HD, not your internal one. Minimum FW800 or eSATA connection (you can connect that via your PCI Slot on your MBP).Greetz.

I agree with Sacha, your main issue is the media storage.
However your MBP has no way to plug an eSATA drive.
A FW800 Raid-0 (like the LaCie d2) would be the faster option.

Actually you can. Just connect an adapter to the PCI express slot. But that will cost you a little money.

Yes, if is a 17″. No if is a 15″; they do not have S-slot.
But I don’t know from where I’ve got the idea was a 15″.
