  • FCP Audio question, Compressor or Limiter

I’m working on a rough mix in FCP and possibly Soundtrack Pro, but wanted to know how to get my VO peaks down. Music hits around -20 or so and VO stripe between -6 & -12. the levels are fine, however with emphasis on certain words and pronunciations differing, those hits peak at 0. Aghhh! Rather than keyframe the audio, how can I limit this and bring them back into the safe realm?

I’m familiar with STP so maybe thats better to use for this. Would you apple a Limiter or Compressor? I would assume the former but what are some basic settings to go by?

I use the FCP Compressor/Limiter on tracks in the timeline with good results.

    Threshold -20
    Ratio 3
    Attack 5
    Release 100
    Preserve Volume checked

The advantage of doing in in STP is the limiter is on the track, not each clip so much easier to setup an overall rather than tweak individual clips.

Also the compressor/ limiters in STP are much better than the ones in FCP.

Also STP have Gain reduction graph, so you can better evaluate the compressor-limiter compression.

Thanks fellas. Which filter is best used for this, as STP has both Compressor and Limiter separate? Does anyone have some general settings in STP?

I would assume you would use the Limiter, but not being well versed in the audio realm, I’m not sure. I know enough to get me by but can easily mess it up too. thx.
