Difficult Decision on Big Edit
Hello Folks,
Sorry if this repeats or seems a dumb question but I’m trying to make a very difficult decision with regards to how to begin a huge editing project that has taken 4 years in India under very difficult circumstances to capture.
The footage is:
XDCam 1080
H.264
1080i
720 60pMacbook Pro 2008 FCP 7
I imagine that the edit will take a good 10 months to complete and my Macbook is long in the tooth but can do the job well in FCP7 once everything is converted to Prores which will take a few weeks. Once converted, I really won’t be doing anything more that straight cutting with just simple transitions until the rough cut is done.
However, if ever there was a time to move to a newer system it is now and I am considering a new Macbook Pro and learning Premiere Pro 6.
I would really interested to hear for someone who has can understand my situation and can guide me towards the best approach knowing that everyone works differently. What would you do?
Also, I trying to do as much research as I can and read a comment that mentioned that an export from Premiere Pro 6 final didn’t quite retain the same quality of Image as did FCPX. I can imaging the difference is minimal but can anyone in the know kindly comment as to which software is best to retain quality of the image?

If you edit in Premier Pro you don’t need to convert the footage.About the quality on Premier exporting, I can’t advice you. I don’t use it.

Right now I am updating the 2008 Macbook from Leopard to Snow Leopard and reinstalling FCP7. Unless I have some new insights on the benefits of upgrading to a new system and software I’m going to see how far I can get with the tools I have. Sure wish there was some way to have a better understanding of how things will go before I get too far into this.
I tried to send you a private message but couldn’t find the button. I spent a year in Laos 12 years ago and really wonderful to stumble upon you and your life there. I’ve spent 10 years in Asia (mostly India) and am always inspired by others who have opted for an unconventional approach to working/ living.

The main advantage of PP is that you will be able to to work with all your stuff as it is.
Of course, all that footage (no XDCAM) will need to be processed/rendered by PP once on the time-line or when exporting. You will skip all the tedious Compressor work and all the Log&Transfer. Sure, you will need a new system to take advantage of PP.
I past in below some interesting articles from FCP users that have make the transition to PP. Those are first impressions and as you will read are very positive. However there are many things that FCP users miss from PP. IHere you will find some cons on PP for FCP users;

I was here at that time, pity that we haven’t meet.
Since 4/5 years things have started to change very fast here, but still an special place. I hope they don’t destroy it too much.

Good stuff Rafael! Totally appreciate the insights.
I’m still trying to understand which is the best way forward. The past 2 weeks I’ve learned a lot.
It’s so easy to want to run out and buy the latest tools. The question is will they help or get in the way? The real challenge here is to build this film (story) in the most interesting way without getting lost in the tools that help me do it. I have what I need to do that, and it’s good to know what’s available because often the tools we have can inform our editing decisions.Eat a nice papaya salad for me!
