Converting 1440×1080 to 1920×1080 Properly?
I’m on a project that’s thinking about shooting with a HVX-200 in AVC-50 for budget reasons. This will produce video that’s 1440×1080 HD. That size is fine for what we’re already confirmed for, but our producer hopes to get the project syndicated to local, commercial stations. Some of those stations broadcast in 1920×1080.
I read somewhere that I can edit this image size in 1920×1080 and everything would look fine. I’m assuming to export I would have to specify that I want the image size to be 1920×1080. Is that the best way to change the size and preserve as much quality as possible? If not, what’s the best way? From what I’ve read, conversion will change the pixel size from non-square to square. I’m hoping proper conversion won’t make everything look badly stretched out and everyone 10 pounds heavier. How bad is the stretch?
I have to talk to my producer this week so any information you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Edit on a 1920×1080 Square pixels sequence and export a QT movie (no QT Conversion).
That’s all.
You can also edit and export 1440×1080 and upscale in Compressor, with “Frame Control ON” to 1920×1080 Squared pixels.

I could swear I’ve edited AVC-Intra 100 in FCP 7 natively in a ProRes timeline. I certainly have in FCP X no problem. It’s also a much better codec than DVC-ProHD. Not sure about the intra 50 variant.

the last 2 HDV projects i worked on were both edited in HDV timelines,
and the change to 1920×1080 happened in post, during the grade / on-line.one went through Color, which dealt with the change,
the other was more complex: play out to HD-CAM, ingest into the grading system.basically each was dealt with by the post house in the way that was best for them.

Please note that he HVX-200 does not offer the AVC-Intra format. It will only record DvcPro HD at 1440×1080. I believe that the HPX-250 will record AVC-Intra 100/50.

BTW, there is no problem editing either AVC-Intra 100 or 50 within Final Cut. The formats work without issue. I shoot AVC-Intra 100 all the time and have never had any issues editing within FCP 7.

Shouldn’t be. Edits XDCam just fine on my MacPro 1,1. There’s a difference between trying to edit h264 and trying to edit supported codecs that FCP specifically supports.
