    Hi everyone,
I just had my first experience shooting with a Canon 5D mark II, video quality was set to the highest possible.
Editing in the timeline worked fine, but now, when I export using the current settings, I get a skippy video full of errors.
Someone explained to me that 5D files don’t work well with Final Cut, and my best option is to first convert the video files and then relink them in my timeline.
However, I’m fighting a deadline and this will cost me too much time. Is there any other way: can I convert the end result, or should I change my workflow settings (someone recommended trying Apple Prores)

Thanks alot in advance, I’m quite desperate

One workaround is to Media Manage your project and recompress to ProRes422. This is quicker than recapture & relink which really only works well if you followed the offline/online workflow that Shane Ross so helpfully made a tutorial about.

Worth watching these tutorials for next time.

Thanks for the reply, could you go more into detail as to how I can “Media Manage and recompress” my project? I’m really a Final Cut rookie, have edited a couple of projects but am not so experienced with all the specifics, and am running out of time a bit. Thanks alot!

Using the Media Manager…from the FCP manual:

    https://documentation.apple.com/en/finalcutpro/usermanual/index.html#chapter=93%26section=3%26tasks=true

In the future, this is the workflow when dealing with tapeless footage, such as from the 5D:

If you want to work with the files natively, you need to use Adobe Premiere, or perhaps the latest FCP-X. Although i hear it likes ProRes footage over H.264 as well. But it will convert them for you in the background while you edit with the H.264 files.

ALright, thanks, I’m gonna give this a try. Is it normal that recompressing to Prores 422 delivers a bigger file than the original?

Yes. Because it is a format that is more pliable for editing. H.264 that the camera shoots is highly compressed and takes a lot of resources to play back.

Just gave this a try, maybe I’m doing something wrong:

right now the duration of the project is about 7 minutes
When I open the media manager, my original file size is about 20 gig, converting to Apple Prores 422 about doubles that. And it would take me 7 hours, time I don’t have.

Any solution or am I screwed?

Did you choose the option DELETE UNUSED MEDIA and give yourself about 30 frames of handles? If you don’t choose that option, it will try to convert EVERYTHING, the full clips, not just the parts used in the cut.

Yeah, that option is selected… Tried playing around with it, but it still would take hours

Is this a possible solution: changing the sequence setting to apple prores 422, then render everything? That would take me about an hour.

    Try that. That might work.
