Text & Camera design for belief UPN spot
Hi there. I am still working my way around AE 7.0. I found a spot online on the belief web site (there stuff is all amazing). Under their Broadcast samples they have a spot they did for a UPN Pitch. the last one (veronica Mars) has been stuck in my head for about a month. I have been trying to create a text look like what they use and also get the camera to move like that. I am not trying to copy it exactly as I want my own flair but I absolutly love the movement and angles they use. My question is, can anyone throw me an idea as to how to create a text look like what they did in that :10 spot? and also any ideas on how they laid out their comps to create those camera movements? I noticed the Background stays consistent through the entire piece so I am guessing maybe they created one large comp and moved the camera around that way instead of 3 small comps. ok this probably makes no sense but if you take a look maybe someone can give me a hand. I am really excited to put something together using this technique, i am just a little lots on how to get started. I have tried getting started about 3 times and then get lost 🙂 I would really appreciate any help or advice from anyone!

If you go to the belief site:
https://www.beliefdesign.com/after entering the site, on the left you will see a button called “BROADCAST”. click on that and then scroll down about 8 lines down and you will see a clip called “UPN PITCH” it is a pink color. when you watch that clip there are 3 different short spots in it. america’s next top model, Kevin Hill and veronica mars. I like the Kevin Hill and Veronica Mars sot for the text and movements. Those are the ones I am trying to re-create, once I can get that look down I can then modify to my own creative ways. It is hard to be creative when I can’t get the initial concept down though. Thanks!

Ahahah, nevermind… I couldn’t find the scroll bar for that pane!
It looks to me like the best way to try to emulate this look in AE would be to create your text layer in a pre-comp. You’ll probably want at least 2 instances of the text layer, one to ‘create outlines’ from and apply a stroke/vegas or similar effect to and the other to add some lighting effects to (maybe CC spotlight or some large blurry moving fractal noise?).
Then you can drop this pre-comp into your final comp a couple of times, make them 3D layers and offset them from each other slightly on the Z axis to get a sort of 3D extrude look. Set their blend mode to something like add.
You should also consider using one of these text layers as a track matte for an adjustment layer that you can apply a blur and levels adjustment to lighten/blur the area behind the text.
These are just some quick ideas to get you started.

as for the BG, do you think those are all one large comp with the camera moving around and the text/images laid out at various angles? I love the movement and the angles, but it seems so complicated, of course I could be making it more complicated in my head. This will be my first big project entirely in AE, as I am an FCP editor trying to move into the Mo-graph world at which I love 🙂thanks for giving me some great ideas to get started!

hmmm, I noticed how clean it was. I started rotoing some video footage taken off a digibeta. I assume that will end up blurry with the camera? Is that due to the 3d space and the distance form the camer lense to the photograph? I am not sure exactly why, this shows what newbie I am! So if I use one large comp for my camera movement I need large hi-res files so they will be sharp. is this correct?

If you move the camera so fast that the image blurs ( through motion blur) when it is close to the camera (that is, big in frame) then you can get away with a softer image of the talent.
In other words, nobody will notice how soft the talent is when it is moving fast and blurry due to motion.

thanks for all the advice, I just had some high res photos ordered, so now I hope I can get the camera to move the same! that seems like the scary part, I have gone through it frame by frame a million times, I have to say the people at belief are so great! -

thanks for the encouragement! I ffeel a little overwhelmed, but I really want to get it so starting today I am getting started! I have about 3 weeks to accomplish something great 🙂
