  Record SMPTE, Export timecode window

  Hi everyone,

  Kind of a newbie question, but I’ve never had to do this before now. I need to videotape a performance with audio on one track and SMPTE on the other. The audio and SMPTE will come from a playback device, synced to the performance. Then, I need to export a Quicktime file for the producer to watch the performance. He needs to be able to see the SMPTE. I’m guessing he’s asking for a timecode window.

  I have a JVC HM700, which has two XLR inputs. If I feed the SMPTE into one of those audio inputs, how do I use FCP to extract the SMPTE? If I could convert it into timecode, I could use the timecode filter to create the TC window.

  I’m using FCP 7.

  Anyway, like I said, I’ve never had to do this before, so I’m hoping someone can lend a hand.

  FCP can’t do it, but this thing can:

  If it’s just one long take, you can use the demo to find the start tc, write it down and enter it in FCP with ‘modify timecode’

  To spot, you can use this:

  It can read TC from QT and display it, but it also can read the LTC.
