  “-v”, onlining and media manager problems

  Hi,

  I’m preparing to online a project originally shot in R3D 4K but finishing in ProRes 4444. The offline was transcoded to 422.
  I think I made an error using media manager to try and sort the unused clips from the project. (I was after something like the ‘sift’ tool in Avid). I’ve realised since that most of my clips in the capture scratch have a “-v” at the end, and they seem to have been shortened- which makes i assume is a result of the Media Manager tool.

  Now trying to re-transcode to 4444 from the source footage I keep getting reconnection errors, or sometimes it reconnects to the wrong part of the clip.
  Has media manager altered the time code of the clips?
  Is it possible to get them back to how they were before? or do I just need to re-transode and manually cut those clips to the right time code. If this is the only solution, will the timecode’s of in an out points in the viewer be correct? (they seem to be)

  I’ve made a string of stupid errors but any help getting out of this hole would be amazing!

  Yes, Media Manager truncated the clips to the used sections (maybe with handles)
  so multiple instances of the same clip will get re-named.
  1st instance = original name
  2nd instance name-v
  3rd & up start using numbers

  you cant reconnect whole-file versions of the media to these clips,
  so you cant just re-transcode entire Red files to PR4x4

  nevertheless there must be some way to use the sequence you have, either directly in FCP (Log & Transfer), or via XML or EDL used in other Apps,
  to transcode only the sections you need from your Red files.

  having never worked with Red, i don’t know what that would be.

  Hi Nick,

  Thanks so much for your response. I have found on another hard drive a backup copy of the project before the media managing catastrophe. So I think the most sure fire way is going to be to replace the timeline clips with those, and adjusting for the differences between them.

  hi Chris.

  oh, i wouldn’t call it a “catastrophe”
  reducing your timeline down to just the media you’ve used can be a pretty useful thing.
  do you really want to have to carry ALL that 4×4 media?

  it might be worth looking into the procedure for getting your Red media into your truncated timeline.

  You should use RedCineX Pro and XML for this. RCX Pro will reconnect to the R3Ds and render out 4444 QTs for you and creates an XML to send back to FCP.
