I’m modelling and animating an award statue in 3ds max that will be used in an after effects project. The problem is the base of the statue is glass and I’m not sure of a way to show the AE background through the 3d rendered glass. It might work just rendering out of Max using the same background as I’m using in AE, but what about if there are AE based particle effects for example that are happening behind the statue. Just trying to scope it out at this point. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You can apply some distortion effects to the isolated base but it would be far better to use the ray tracer in your 3D app to process the AE images. That, of course, requires the AE background to be golden before the 3D work is done.

Be sure to make a separate pass out of the 3D app that is just the base.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

I’m not sure how alpha is rendered in those situations from 3ds Max, but my guess is that transparency in the base will probably be maintained. Have you rendered a test image? I think the more difficult aspect of the project is making it look like the glass base is distorting the background.

Thanks guys, I figured on those solutions but I wanted to make sure there wasn’t a better way of achieving that look.
