  ProRes 422 (HQ)

  Hey Guys,

  Big problem…

  I have a finished film in FCPX which is about 86 minutes long, but the problem is that I didn’t select the clips to be converted to ProRes 422 (HQ) when I started. This is a real problem as I need the film to be an Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) file, before I take it to be colour graded.

  Now that I have finished editing, is it too late? Can it only be done in the beginning? Do I need to restart the whole editing process again or is there a way around it? Can I just export it as ProRes 422 (HQ) or is that not the same thing?

  I’m really afraid that I’m going to have to start all over again because of that one detail, so PLEASE tell me that is not the case. There is a deadline for this and it just wouldn’t be possible to restart.

  There must be a way. Please, please, please help!

  Are you taking a single .mov file of your entire timeline over to be graded? If so, just export it out as ProRes422 (HQ).

  If you are giving them an XML (which they will need your media then to relink to), you’ll have to transcode your original footage and then relink your timeline to the new ProRes422 (HQ) clips. Not sure how easy this is in FCPX, but if you’ve got the time anything is possible! 😉

  Yes I’m taking a single .mov file of my entire timeline to be graded. Does this mean that it will retain it’s original quality when played on bigger screens? Can I then import it into FCPX again, break apart clip items for some additional work? And lastly, is the estimated file size supposed to be significantly bigger (e.g. over 100gb)?

  If you’re doing ProRes (HQ) then you’re finished product will be over 100GB.

  The data rate for 1080p (HQ) is 220Mbps. That works out to be about 100GB/hour. This Apple page breaks out all the different ProRes codecs and resolutions with their corresponding data rates:

  Then you can use a bandwidth to file size calculator to come up with more exact sizes for your given scenario:

  Your file will probably run around 125GB as a finished mov (HQ) file.
