HD film on a menu driven blu ray
We have completed 3 films that will be played out on an HD screen that is attached to a blu-ray player.
I am slightly confused by the options available to create menu driven Blu-ray player compatible HD output.
I know compressor can create a file just fine. And I can use the Share option on FCP. So I can happily burn HD 264 files to BD all day long but I suspect that is not going to give the client what they need…
What option is there to create a menu (at best custom, but would settle for template possibly) for the three films that allow the operator to select each one?
Is the Blu-Ray burn a red herring and is there instead a perfectly good way of creating HD material in DVDSP with a custom menu that would play on Blu-Ray players?
The bottom line is I need to find a way to offer the choice of 3 films, in HD on a big screen, low tech, no computers, just a player. I have FCPS and Roxio Toast 11.

Sadly DVDSP does not support BluRay at all – the HD option in DVDSP is for the old, now dead, HD DVD standard that is totally uncompatible with BluRay.
You can create a basic BluRay in Compressor but it is a “one-shot” deal. By that I mean you can create a disk but no custom menu, it encodes and burns in a single action.
It does give a very basic preset menu option – however I have never tried using it with more than a single file.Others may advise if it can handle 3 files and create a simple selectable preset menu.
I would have thought Toast 11 would be your best option of the two you have.
I use Adobe Encore for BluRay and while by no means perfect it does give you a few more basic options than Compressor.

As I understand it, it is a licensing issue that makes it not possible for low cost blu ray authoring at this stage… by the time that changes we shall presumably have moved on again.
Anyway I will look in to the Roxio options but cannot help thinking the future lies far away from the optical disc.

Yes you could well be right. For most people there are many other alternative platforms for viewing HD material and you have to figure that DVD’s will go the way of CDs.
In terms of getting HD to clients it is still not that easy to deliver long HD files across the net. Not to mention all the potential codec issues platform/computer compatibility with files. At least, all things being equal. DVD is a set standard and should play universally.
