Need 1080 P2 in Slow-Motion for FCS…
Hey all. I searched around for this one a bit, and I’m not quite understanding the information that’s available. I apologize in advance for this post, because I am almost certain that the question has been answered, but maybe in a way that I’m just not understanding it…
So, here is the situation (I’m putting in as much information as I can, because I don’t know if any of these variables affect the outcome):
The goal: There should be 3 clips on these P2 cards that are shot as Slow-Motion (60fps “conformed” to 30p in-camera… at least, that is what the shooter and producer are saying)
Step 1: I have been given a hard drive that has the P2 folders that have been dumped to it. The P2 files were not in their “normal” file structure: I had to place the “CONTENT” folders into another folder (which I have named P2_CardX for each CONTENT folder) in order for Log and Transfer to read the files.
So, after getting the file structure recognized by FCS, I imported all the files. The 3 that were supposed to be in Slow-Motion show up like this in FCP’s Browser:
– Clip 1 is 1920×1080 Apple AVC-Intra 100M 1080i60 @ 29.97 (13.9MB/sec)
– Clip 2 is 1280×1080 DVCPRO HD 1080i60 @ 29.97 (14.1MB/sec)
– Clip 3 is 1280×1080 DVCPRO HD 1080i60 @ 29.97 (14.1MB/sec)These clips were then placed into a Apple ProRes422 1080, 29.97 timeline. The clips all play fine. But they aren’t slow-motion.
So, all of the clips play fine in FCS at “normal” speed. But when Slow-Mo’d, they look bad, like 30 was the native framerate all along.
Step 2: So, I went back and attempted to re-import the footage using Log and Transfer, but this time I un-ticked the box in preferences labeled: “Remove Advanced Pulldown and Duplicate Frames”. This produced the same result in FCP’s Browser and playback.
Step 3: Went and opened up a new project, re-imported Clip 1 only. Found Clip 1 in Finder, opened with Cinema Tools, conformed to 30p. It looks exactly the same. No difference in speed. etc.
What am I doing wrong? Or is this one of those times where I may actually be right, and these clips were not really in 60fps?
Thanks in advance for any advice you can give. This is my first time dealing with P2 media, & I have to say I’m not really a fan. 😛

I think you shot 1080i/60, which is not 60 frames per second. It’s 29.97. so no slow motion for you.
60 frames per second is only available at 720p on many cameras.

OK, so even though the codec says its 60fps, this isn’t actually 60fps? I know that 60 (technically 59.94) in 720p is the standard, we do that all the time. But I have never worked in 1080/60…
There seems to be an awful lot of sites/blogs/articles that say that this IS a 60 fps clip, but I get the feeling that I’m just not importing it properly.
I’m using a MacPro with the latest version of FCS, btw. I forgot to mention that in my original post.

1080i/60 is 29.97 fps. It is 60 interlaced FIELDS per second.

There is such a thing as 60 frames per second in 1080, but not in the formats you are shooting.

I don’t know what sites or blogs you are reading, but they are wrong. They are misinforming you. Stop reading them.
They only 60 frames per second format is 720p. Unless you count the Phantom camera that is designed to shoot hundreds and thousands of fps, and the Red cameras that shoot 2k and 4k at 120fps. Normal broadcast compatible cameras only do 60fps at 720p.
There is one consumer camera that shoots 1080p60. Panasonic TM600…some such number. AVCHD format. That is the only camera I know that shoots 1080p at 60fps

Thanks very much to all of you. I really apologize for the confusion.
I think it was a combination of there being a lot of “half-true” information in my brain, misunderstanding what I was reading, combined with a shooter and producer SCREAMING at me that I didn’t know what I was doing and didn’t know how to import the footage properly.
My fault for letting them know that I’m to a veteran at handling P2 footage… 😛
