  Drawing a door/Cartoon effect

  Okay, I have this movie coming up. And there’s a scene where the main character is being chased and have to come up with something in order to escape…

  My idea:

  I want him to draw/paint a door/tunnel on a wall, open the door he drew and escape through it. When the others try to follow him through the door/tunnel they crash into the wall, like it was painted on. In other words a classic cartoon effect

  (This is a “road runner” episode where the effect occurs)

  Does anyone have an idea on how I can achieve this?
  – how to shoot it?
  – how to handle the effects? (can it be done in AE or do I need to use a 3d program?)

  PS. I have a greenscreen

  How about filming going through a real door/tunnel (one you like the look of), then taking a still or freeze frame of the door/tunnel, create what’s beneath the door/tunnel (the wall) in Photoshop, cloning probably). So your characters paints-on the door/tunnel, a reveal really, with masks or write-on or Stroke or Scribble. Then the actors chasing would have to act like they hit a wall, or use your green screen footage there. The still for the door tunnel could be dulled with levels to make it appear flatter, or you could use that angle change they do in the cartoon.

  I hope that makes sense, basically its 1) use a real tunnel, 2) fake the wall, instead of vise-versa. It seems like it would be more convincing.

  heey

  i agree, because you can make a door you like with some cool brushes in photoshop. then mask it the right way like your actors is drawing it (in AE), only then he has to open it. and yeah, opening a door were actualy isn’t one can be tricky to convince, and perspectives are a point to look at. further more is that the door shoot be before your character when opening, so you have to greenscreen your actor. and put him behind it or you can rotoscope the door.

  so as yikesmikes discribes should be one of the easies way’s.
  only the look’s of your door isn’t realy cartoonlike, more the running agains a wall effect. another cool thing is after your actor closes the door, make it dissapear by revealing your cloned piece of wall and then let the others guys run into it

  nice project though, alway’s fun to do 🙂
