Drop in quality after using Final Cut Color
Hi – I have a project that I have edited in Final Cut 7.0.3
Sequence Settings:
1920×1080 30p
Square pixels
Compressor: XDCAM 1080 30p (35Mbps VBR)In my sequence in Final Cut Pro, I use the “Send to Color” option to send my sequence to Color.
The project settings in Color are as follows:
Resolution Preset 1920 x 1080
Export Compressor: Uncompressed 10-bit as well as Apple Pro Res 422 (HQ) (I have tried both)When I “Send to Final Cut”, there is a visible drop in the quality as compared to the original XDCAM timeline.
Is there a way around this or do I just have to live with the drop in quality.

Something isn’t right. Color has been used professionally for the last several years by thousands of users all over the world, and I use it. No loss in quality, ever.

The image after being color corrected using Color looked less sharp. The difference is very subtle but unacceptable.
We are using an external monitor and when we zoom into the image at 200% to take a look at the fine details, there is a big difference between the pre-color corrected version and the post color version.Render Settings in Color: Apple Pro Res 422 (HQ)

Video Processing: Render in 8-bit YUVLate last night we tried a different method. We copied the sequence from the XDCAM timeline to an Apple Pro Res 422 HQ timeline in FINAL CUT PRO. Then we rendered and sent this sequence to COLOR, did some color correction and sent it back to FCP.
This indirect method made a HUGE difference in quality.But my question is: Why do we have to convert the XDCAM footage in FCP FIRST BEFORE sending it to Color? Should not COLOR handle the codec conversion/compression?

Color improved with version 1.5 particularly in the way it handled camera codecs. The important aspect in your render settings is also the bit depth. If the render is set to 8 bit it might explain the drop in quality post grade.
Check and see if your render settings are at least 10 bit. You can also chose 12 bit or floating point but these take longer to render. I usually set for 12 bit and that has quality but reasonable render times.
