interlace playback vs. pause

My question is hopefully simple enough. I have been given footage that was captured on set from a live tv feed – its 29.97. I’m using a Kona card and I am outputting to a broadcast monitor all at 29.97 – upper dominance. When I pause on any frame in the video, I am seeing both fields at the same time and it looks awful. During play back its not noticeable but I wanted to make sure this is correct.

So is the Kona just combining the fields so I can see a full image? Also, to display on the web should I just send to compressor and de-interlace the final spot as the last step?

Well, yes. Any video IO card does that. Your Tube TV does that. You should read up on what interlaced video is. Before HD came along, EVERYTHING you saw on TV was interlaced. Even TV shows shot on film, when telecined to tape, were then interlaced. Even and odd fields and how they are combined on a TV. When played, it looks quite normal.

OH yes…The web doesn’t do interlacing. It looks really bad.

That depends upon the size of your final video output for the Web. If your final video size is 50% or less than the original, it will not require deinterlacing.

January 30, 2012 at 11:39 pmThe Kona3 card allows you to choose to display single field in pause. I work with interlaced material for broadcast so I have that option selected so you don’t have awful beat movement when you pause the timeline.

January 31, 2012 at 11:26 amOliver, Tom is correct as the frame rate is NTSC 29.97. PAL is all upper for SD & HD except DV & DVCPro50.
