well, its finally happened. i have encountered a problem which either nobody else seems to have had, or, everyone else is clever enough to fix it with out actually having to write a post on a forum.

i have bought myself a new imac (lion) as editing on my macbookpro (snow leopard)was causing my eyes to leave their sockets

my project is mainly shot on xdcam. and all stored on an external drive. but when i try and transfer the project to the imac. FCP cannot find the off line files. even when i ‘locate’ the actual file it still doesnt allow me to connect to it and the file remains off line.

it has me bamboozled! i have run all updates on my imac. spoken gently to it and even offered to buy it a new printer.. yet the swine still wont allow me to connect to the media files.

if you can help me and my sanity i would very much appreciate it.

actually. i think i might kiss you

    thank you
    James

When you reconnect the files try deselecting the box that says Matched Name and Reel Only. This will allow you to connect any movie file. Be sure you select the correct file, though. Maybe try a couple of single files first.

    Hi Neal

Thank you so much for your response. alas i have tried that approach. its so weird. it allows to me select the file. but doesn’t actually connect to the media.
maybe it is a problem when transferring a project from a snow leopard op system to lion?…..maybe?… straws being clutched?

If you use the Media Manager “Copy” function to move the entire project to a new hard drive, you will avoid relinking files altogether. It’s actually the “proper” way to do the job if you want to insure a 100% seamless move.

Read the manual beforehand, and don’t use the “move” function, which is a destructive method for accomplishing the same thing.

Are the files you’re having trouble reconnecting render files by any chance? I’ve seen it happen before where you can’t get em reconnected…and if they are deleted without using the render manager, FCP will keep looking for em even if told to forget em. Might try deleting the thumbnails cache if tats the case. Thought it could be worth a try!

First 2 sentences of your post made me laugh out loud. Thank you. So you are editing with the native camera files? Or is FCP looking for maybe ProRes files that you are actually editing with? I know it sounds stupid, just asking. 🙂

Glad to be of help to you James.

BTW, I’d advise using washable ink for that tattoo, since the real FCP (legacy) will unfortunately become vapor way too soon.
