parenting an object to vegas rotation
Posted by Avgdroid on November 17, 2007 at 2:50 amHow can I parent an object to a swish moving around my logo in an oval motion? The swish rotation is done by the built-in Vegas plugin of AE Pro. I want the object to follow the start point of the swish.
THX in advance!

November 17, 2007 at 4:21 pmYou can’t parent that.
You can, however, make an object move along a path by copying that path (mask), then pasting it into the object’s position keyframes. If Vegas used a mask for its shape, you’re in. If Vegas used the logo shape’s alpha, you’ll have to auto-trace the logo to get a mask, then copy that mask, then paste into the moving object’s position keyframes.

I’m absolutely new to AE and unfortunately don’t really know how I could carry out what you suggested me. I’m sorry 🙂 My Vegas effect has only rotation keyframes, it doesn’t look it’s working by masking. It uses a path along which the swish is moved around. How could I track the motion of the swish if there’s no property I could copy to an other object’s position keyframes.
Thank you.
sorry for my English

November 18, 2007 at 1:29 amI see what you mean, if that first Vegas parameter, Stroke, is set to Contours, there is no path to copy/paste, so you are a bit “up the creek”.
Can you track the leading edge of the Swish? Maybe make a duplicate copy and tweak Vegas to make that leading edge of the swish more track-able. Anyway if you get a track you’d have keyframes to copy/paste.
Otherwise you’re left with a simple manual animation of the object you want to parent to the leading edge of the Swish. Sometimes it’s easier and faster just to keyframe the position of that object. If you get one rotation you can always loop that if there are many revolutions of the Swish.

November 18, 2007 at 1:55 amThank you for the tips. However, I use stroke option set to Mask/Path and now I managed to copy the path to an other objects position keyframes. Now, how can I go on editing, rotating the copied path? I can’t grab it to rotate it in 3d. 🙂 I can only edit the solid belonging to the path. Sorry, I should’ve read a manual on it but I’ve got to hurry with this project.

November 18, 2007 at 5:29 amI don’t quite know what you’re doing but if you want to rotate the path, then you could always make a duplicate of the layer with the mask, make it 3D, rotate that layer, then when it is aligned in AE 3D-land like you like, Copy that Mask Shape and Paste, then the new position keyframes will have that 3D path that matches the masks 3D Orientation.
There’s probably a better way, but I’m blanking at the moment.
