FCP 7.0.3 and Flash
Posted by Paul Turlick on December 12, 2011 at 6:07 pmHi-
Wondering if anybody has an idea on this one. Working on a project in two different rooms. Flash segments in a timeline in one room won’t play in the other. Just comes up white and won’t render. The CPU’s are different but both are running 7.0.3. Also, both have the same Flash Plug-in in the Internet folder in the Library.
Any thoughts?
TIA-

December 12, 2011 at 7:03 pmYour Flash component may be tricking one of the machines into playing back Flash on the FCP timeline, but it really shouldn’t be working on either machine.
Flash is definitely not a realtime Apple codec that FCP recognizes. You should transcode those files to a proper FCP editing codec such as ProRes. If you require an alpha channel then ProRes 4444 might work. Otherwise, the Adobe suite of tools might be a better choice for what you’re doing.

December 12, 2011 at 7:28 pmThanks. It’s strange because the editor is who is working on the machine that it DOES play on says it plays on his home machine and his laptop. The editor on who’s machine it DOESN’T work won’t work on her machine at home either. Both edits have CS3 on them. The only difference I’m seeing as of now is that the machine that can play them has Flip4Mac installed. I didn’t think that worked in the background though….

December 12, 2011 at 7:49 pmUnder any circumstance, it really shouldn’t be working, and certainly shouldn’t be something you’d want to count on. It’s similar in many ways to editing h.264 or mp4 files – yes, these files will appear on the timeline, and may lull the unwary into thinking they can be edited, but they are fraught with problems that eventually will come back to haunt you.

December 12, 2011 at 9:11 pmagreed and understood. It’s actually archival footage that is not acquired yet so it’s only being used as a placeholder. FYI – I think what was making it work was MPEG Streamclip with the Perian plug in.
Thanks.

That’s exactly right Paul. And, I can assure you, if you don’t go ahead and transcode now, when it would come time for you to export a copy for client approval etc. you would probably encounter issues that would make you crazy.
